CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – For the second consecutive weekend, the University of Virginia softball team hosts an Atlantic Coast Conference three-game series as Florida State visits The Park. The series starts Saturday (Apr. 8) with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Cavaliers wrap up the three-game conference set with a 1:00 p.m. game Sunday (Apr. 9). Admission is free of charge. On Sunday, children are invited to join their favorite Cavalier on the field for the playing of the national anthem. An autograph session with all UVa players will follow Sunday’s game.
The Cavaliers enter the weekend with a 19-16 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the ACC. UVa is coming off a doubleheader split with Liberty on Tuesday (Apr. 4). Virginia lost the first game 5-2, but bounced back with a 13-3 five-inning victory in the nightcap. The Cavaliers’ 13 runs and 18 hits in the second game are season highs.
Florida State is 29-18 overall and 5-4 in the ACC this season. The Seminoles have played 37 of their 47 games this season at home, including all nine of their ACC contests. Florida State is coming of a doubleheader sweep over 24th-ranked Florida on Wednesday (Apr. 5) in Tallahassee. The Seminoles won the first game 4-0 and then took the second game 6-5 in eight innings.
Florida State leads the all-time series with Virginia 52-14. UVa dropped all three games to the Seminoles last season in Tallahassee. Florida State swept a doubleheader 5-3 and 4-0 on Apr. 23 and took the final game 3-2 on Apr. 24 by scoring the game-winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh. In 2004, UVa split two contests with then second-ranked Florida State on April 17. The Seminoles won the first game 1-0, while Virginia scored four runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh for a 5-4 victory in the second game.
