Virginia Second Varsity Eight Defeats Michigan State At Rivanna Reservoir

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The sixth-ranked Virginia women’s rowing team won one of four events against twelfth-ranked Michigan State on Saturday (April 8). The Cavaliers defeated the Spartans in the second varsity eight race at the Rivanna Reservoir in the team’s only home event of the season. The Spartans won the novice eight, varsity four and varsity eight competitions.

Virginia’s second varsity eight crew had the team’s only victory at the regatta, defeating Michigan State with a time of 6:42.26. The Spartans finished with a time of 6:44.1.

Members of Virginia’s second varsity eight crew included Caitlin Mixter (coxswain), Mindy Fiesler, Renee Albers, Katrin Sydlik, Bridget Fowler, Kelsie Chaudoin, Mieke Pitts, Anna Samaha, and Crystal MacLeod.

Michigan State’s novice eight boat won the first competition of the regatta, defeating the Cavaliers with a time of 7:04. UVa’s “A” boat finished second with a time of 7:10, followed by the Virginia “B” boat in third (7:41).

The Spartans also defeated Virginia in the varsity four competition. The Cavaliers led the varsity four race, until the Virginia “A” boat ran into a buoy causing the race to be restarted. In the second race, Michigan State won the competition with a time of 7:35.2. The Virginia “A” crew finished in 7:41.22, followed by Virginia’s “B” boat in 7:58.5.

The Cavalier varsity eight boat lost to Michigan State in the last event of the regatta. Virginia led early, but lost the lead at the course’s turn, finishing with a time of 6:40.67. The Spartans finished with a time of 6:35.45.

At the conclusion of competition, the team dedicated two boats – one in honor of UVa Senior Associate Athletic Director Jane Miller and one for the Cavalier parents.

The next regatta for the UVa women’s rowing team is scheduled for Saturday, April 15, when Virginia travels to Princeton, N.J. to compete against Princeton and Yale.
