Virginia Men’s Tennis Downs Florida State 5-2

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 8 ranked Virginia men’s tennis team closed out the home portion of its 2006 schedule is strong fashion Sunday, defeating No. 23 Florida State 5-2 at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improve to 18-6 on the season, 8-1 in the ACC, while the Seminoles fall to 13-10, 6-3 in the conference.

The Cavaliers opened the contest by winning the doubles point for the 13th consecutive match. The team of Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) and Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) scored an 8-3 win over Maciek Sykut and Andrew Bailey at No. 2 doubles. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) then clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-6 at No. 3 doubles over Jonathas Sucupira and Sam Chang.

In singles, the Cavaliers extended their lead to 2-0 as Cohen cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Chris Cloer at No. 6 singles. That lead became 3-0 as Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) downed Sucupira in straight sets at No. 2 singles. Florida State rallied to cut the score to 3-2 with wins at No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Devvarman then clinched the win for Virginia with his three set win over Ytai Abougzir at the No. 1 position. Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) closed out the match with a three set win over Sykut at No. 4 singles.

“Today was a great day for Virginia tennis,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “It was a great day, with both teams playing at home, and for both teams to get big wins on senior day, it makes today really special.”

The Cavaliers close out the regular season next weekend as they visit North Carolina on Friday and Duke on Sunday.
