CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia women’s tennis player Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) was named ACC Women’s Tennis Co-Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Pereira, who clinched the Cavaliers’ win over No. 6 Miami Sunday, shares the award with Melissa Mang of Duke.

In Sunday’s win over the sixth ranked Hurricanes, the highest ranked opponent the Cavaliers have ever beaten, Pereira clinched the victory in dramatic fashion. With the dual match tied at 3-3, Pereira trailed Patricia Starzyk 6-7, 3-5 at No. 4 singles. Pereira broke Starzyk’s serve to get to 4-5 in the second set, but fell behind 0-40 while serving the next game. Pereira was able to fight off those three match points against her and held serve to even the second set 5-5. She then broke Starzyk’s serve again and held her serve to win the set 7-5 and force a third and deciding set. The Cavalier second-year took that final set 6-1 to clinch Virginia’s fifth ACC win of the season, tying the school record.

On Saturday, Pereira downed Suzanna Mansour of Florida State, 6-3, 6-3, in the Cavaliers’ 6-1 win over the No. 70 ranked Seminoles.

The honor is the first of Pereira’s career and the third ACC Player of the Week for the Cavaliers this season. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) was honored on January 30, as was Douglas Wink (Greensboro, N.C.) on March 27.

The Cavaliers will close out the regular season this week as they visit Boston College on Thursday and Maryland on Saturday.
