SHANGHAI, China – University of Virginia third-year swimmer Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split) competed in four events at the eighth annual FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships, which were held April 5-9 at Oizhong Stadium in Shanghai, China. Rogulj advanced to the semifinals of both the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke events and helped Croatia to a sixth-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
Rogulj began competition in the short course (25 meter pool) World Championships on Apr. 5 by competing in the 100-meter breaststroke. He was 16th in the semifinals with a time of 1:00.37 after placing 15th in the preliminaries (1:00.18). In the 200 breaststroke on Apr. 7, Rogulj clocked a time of 2:14.29 to finish 24th in the prelims. Rogulj rounded out his individual events by swimming in the 50-meter breaststroke on Apr. 8. He was 13th in the semifinals with a time of 27.77 after finishing 12th in the prelims in 27.73.
Rogulj concluded the Final World Championships by helping Croatia finish sixth in the 400-meter medley relay with a time of 3:34.14 on Apr. 9. Rogulj posted a 59.52 split in his breaststroke leg. Croatia advanced to the finals by finishing sixth in the prelims with a time of 3:35.32 with Rogulj touching in 59.86 in his breast leg.
The two-time Olympian for Croatia is a nine-time All-American, including three honorable mention certificates at the 2006 NCAA Championships. He captured first-team All-America honors in the 100 breast (sixth) and 200 breast (fifth) in 2005. Rogulj went on to earn 2005 ACC Men’s Swimmer of the Year honors. He was the ACC Men’s Freshman of the Year in 2004.
