Despite outdrawing the No. 3 Georgetown Hoyas 8-6, the No. 4 Cavaliers fell today (April 19) 8-6 in Washington, D.C. Nikki Lieb led Virginia (13-3) with three draw controls while Whitaker Hagerman and Kim Connors both had two. Tyler Leachman led the Cavaliers with three goals, while Lieb added three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Schuyler Sutton led the Hoyas (10-2) with four goals while Coco Stanwick had a pair of goals and four draw controls.

The Hoyas bolted out to the early lead, scoring three times in 3:09 behind an 8-meter goal from Lucy Poole and a pair of unassisted goals from Stanwick and Courtney Hubschman.

Virginia got on the board as Connors caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball, breaking a Georgetown clear at the restraining line. At the other end of the field, the Cavaliers settled the ball and Blair Weymouth fed the ball down low to Leachman, who rolled up the crease and scored at 12:40 for the Hoos’ opening goal. Again GU went on a quick blitz, as Stanwick scored again and Sutton notched a pair, all in the span of 2:08, to pull out to a 6-1 lead.

A Jessy Morgan ground ball behind the cage gave the Cavaliers possession, and at the other end of the field Megan O’Malley picked up her own rebound and stuffed it back in the goal to stop the Hoyas’ run, pulling Virginia within four at 6-2. The teams went into the break with this score.

Georgetown broke a scoreless stretch of 18:54 as Sutton scored another goal, but Virginia answered right back as Lieb won the draw, sent the ball up to Jess Wasilewski, who in turn fed Leachman, who rocketed a shot to the cage 12 seconds after the GU goal to keep Virginia within four.

The teams traded possessions over the next 20 minutes as Miles made three saves and Maggie Koch made four of her game-high 13 saves to keep the teams off the boards; the Cavaliers were called for goal circle violations twice in that span as well.

One of those Miles saves led to the next Virginia goal as she outletted the ball to Jen Holden, who gave the ball to Weymouth, who cleared the ball the length of the midfield before getting the ball in the hands of Leachman. Leachman drew a foul on the center hash and converted the shot for a 7-4 game. Virginia won the draw but lost the ball, and Sutton scored less than a minute later for the final score of 8-4.

Miles made eight saves, giving her over 306 for her career, one of only eight players in school history to reach this milestone.

Virginia returns to action next week at the ACC Championships in Baltimore, Md. Seeds will be announced by the ACC office immediately following the conclusion of the Maryland-Boston College game this weekend.
