Six Cavaliers Named to All-ACC Men’s Tennis Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE – For the second consecutive season, the Virginia men’s tennis team led all conference schools with six players named to the All-ACC men’s tennis team. Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.), Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India), Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.), Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.), Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), and Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) were named to the 18-player team.

Cohen was named to the squad for the second consecutive season after teaming with Stewart to win the doubles flight 3 title. He and Stewart are 17-5 this season in doubles, including a 7-2 mark in the ACC. Overall, Cohen has 30 doubles wins this season, four shy of the Cavalier season record. Individually, Cohen has a 17-10 singles record.

Devvarman was also named to the squad for the second consecutive season. He is currently ranked No. 13 in the nation in singles, with an overall singles record of 24-9, 6-3 in the ACC. In doubles, Devvarman has teamed with Huey for a 16-8 record, 7-2 in the ACC.

Huey was named to the team for the second consecutive season after capturing the No. 4 singles crown. Ranked No. 79 nationally in singles, Huey has a 28-11 record in singles, including an 8-2 mark in the conference. In doubles, he has teamed with Devvarman for a 16-8 record, 7-2 in the ACC.

Meythaler earns All-ACC accolades for the first time in his career after he teamed with Rizza to win the doubles flight 1 title. The duo is currently ranked No. 10 nationally and has a 14-4 record this season, 7-1 in the ACC.

Rizza was named All-ACC for the third consecutive season. In addition to teaming with Meythaler for the doubles flight 1 title, Rizza has a 26-12 singles record this season, including an 8-1 mark in the conference.

Stewart was named All-ACC for the fourth time, joining Brian Vahaly (98-01) as the only Cavaliers ever to be named All-ACC all four years. A double flight 3 champion with Cohen, Stewart has a 17-6 doubles record this season, 7-2 in the ACC.

The six selections ties the Cavalier record set last season. Last year, Virginia became the first school to have six All-ACC selections since 1985 when Clemson had six.

The Cavaliers (19-7, 9-2) won a share of the their third consecutive ACC regular season title and will be the No. 2 seed at the 2006 ACC Tournament which begins Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center. Virginia will have a first round bye and play the winner of Clemson and NC State in the quarterfinals on Friday.
