Virginia’s Blair Weymouth was named the ACC Freshman of the Year and joined teammates Nikki Lieb, Tyler Leachman, and Kim Connors on the All-Conference Team, as announced by the league office at the ACC Tournament banquet held in Baltimore, Md tonight (Apr. 27). Weymouth is Virginia’s fifth Rookie of the Year in program history as she joins Amy Fromal, Mills Hook, Caitlin Banks and Amy Appelt. The Cavaliers (13-3) face North Carolina in ACC Semifinal action on Fridayat M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md.
Lieb earned her third All-Conference honor after leading Virginia in draw controls and caused turnovers while taking on an additional role in scoring. Lieb ranks third in the conference in draw controls per game with 35. She has notched 128 career draw controls and ranks fourth in school history. Her 82 career caused turnovers ranks seventh, and she is poised to become only the second player in school history to record 200 ground balls, 75 caused turnovers, and 100 draw controls in a career. She is a two-time first-team All-American and has earned All-Tournament honors in both the ACC Tournament and the NCAA Championships in both of the last two years. She advanced to the final round of tryouts for the USA 2005 World Cup team in January of 2005. A team captain, Lieb also has notched a career-high with 22 goals, 15 assists and 37 points this season. Tyler Leachman is on the ACC All-Conference team for the second consecutive year after leading Virginia in goals for the second consecutive year. A first-team All-American in 2005, Leachman again leads the Hoos with 45 goals and 27 assists for 72 points, which ranks sixth all-time as a fourth year in Virginia history. Her 246 career points ranks fourth all-time, and her 102 draw controls ranks tenth in Virginia history. She is one of only two players in school history to have 100 draw controls and 200 points in a career. Leachman ranks 14th in the nation in points per game. She was the National Player of the Week on March 13 and was twice named the ACC Player of the Week. Leachman is on the Tewaaraton Watchlist.
Kim Connors was an All-American in 2005 but this is her first selection to the All-Conference team. A workhorse in the midfield and defense, Connors ranks third on the team with 24 draw controls and seventh in ground balls. A crucial part of the transition going both ways, Connors also is a scoring threat and ranks eighth on the team in scoring.
Weymouth is having a phenomenal first year at the University. She is Virginia’s first first-year to be named to the All-Conference team. She ranks second on the team in goals (41) and assists (20) and she ranks third in the league in points per game, fifth in goals per game, and third in assists per game. Her 61 points is the third-highest single-season total for a first-year in school history and she needs one assist to become the all-time leader in assists as a first year. She was named the National Rookie of the Week on March 14 and is on the Tewaaraton Watchlist as a true freshman.
