CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – – Sophomore forward Yannick Reyering (Mettingen, Germany) scored on Nico Colaluca’s (Coventry, R.I.) corner kick in the 88th minute as No. 3 Virginia shut out No. 10 UCLA, 1-0, Monday night at Klockner Stadium. It was the Cavaliers (4-0-0) fourth straight shutout while the Bruins fell to 0-2-1 on the season.

“This was a big win for us,” UVa head coach George Gelnovatch said. “This game had a playoff feel to it. We had a great crowd, and we were able to score late after having several quality chances. This game along with our UCSB game has really prepared us for conference play. We couldn’t have started off things a better way.”

The Cavaliers finally broke through the Bruins’ defense in the 87th minute. After UVa was awarded a corner kick, Jeremy Barlow’s (Herndon, Va.) first attempt was blocked out wide, which allowed the Cavaliers another chance. Colaluca took his corner from the right side. He sent a ball over the middle that skipped to Reyering. Reyering reared back and fired a shot from about 10 yards out that proved to be the game-winner at the 88:13 mark.

UCLA and Virginia swapped several opportunities in the last 20 minutes of the game. Reyering missed high on a breakaway in the 77th minute. Three minutes before his attempt, UCLA’s Sal Zizzo headed a ball just wide in the 74th minute. The Bruins had two chances in the 67th minute as Ryan Burke made one of four saves after a shot by Jason Leopoldo. UCLA’s best chance came 30 seconds later when Mike Zaher hit the right post on a shot from 20 yards out.

The Cavaliers controlled the tempo in the first half as the two teams battled to a scoreless tie and UVa out-shot UCLA, 9-6. Adam Cristman had a breakaway that UCLA goalkeeper Eric Reed threw up his hands to make a save on a shot. One minute later, Cristman found himself in the same situation, but his shot sailed just wide to end the threat. Colaluca’s shot in the 39th minute looked to be on frame, but Reed made his third save of the period to keep it scoreless.

Virginia out-shot UCLA, 15-11, in the match. The Bruins held an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks. Burke picked up his third shutout of the season for Virginia. He now has 23 career shutouts, which moves him into second place all-time. He finished with four saves. Reed allowed the one goal, but also picked up four saves for the Bruins.

Virginia hits the road for its first trip of the season as the Cavaliers travel to NC State at 2 p.m. Saturday in its Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
