The University of Virginia field hockey team has earned more national recognition following their strong start on the pitch in the first three games of the 2006 season. The Cavaliers are now ranked No. 11 in the NFHCA poll, sponsored by STX, up from No. 19 in the preseason, and are now No. 14 in the womensfieldhockey.com poll after being unranked in the preseason.
The Cavaliers upset then-No. 7/10 Indiana last week and beat Ohio in the first two games of the season before falling to No. 4/5 Old Dominion, who jumped to No. 3 in the NFHCA poll this week.
“It’s nice recognition,” said fourth year goalkeeper Katherine Blair, “but it’s also just the start of the season. We still have to do the work on the field, including two back-to-back games this week that will be a tough test. But it is nice to see that what we have already done is still being noticed.”
Virginia hosts Pacific on Wednesday (Sep 6) and Northwestern on Thursday (Sep 7) at University Hall Turf Field. Game time is 6:00 for both games. Admission is free and live commentary is available on virginiasports.com.
