Men’s Tennis Opens Play at UVa Fall Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team kicked off its 2006 Fall season Friday as play began at the UVa Fall Invitational at the Snyder Tennis Center. The tournament, which features players from 22 schools will continue through Sunday.

In the Blue and Orange Singles draws, which both feature at least 10 ranked players, the Cavaliers picked up three opening round victories. Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India), the Blue draw’s top seed, scored a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Colin O’Brien of William & Mary. Also in the blue draw, Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) advanced to the quarterfinals with a three-set win over Damar Johnson of Louisville. In the Orange draw, Treat Huey topped Louisville’s Slavko Radman, the nation’s No. 29 ranked player, 6-2, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals.

Play will continue at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The tournament concludes Sunday. Admission is free.
