The Virginia women’s field hockey team has moved into the top seven nationally in the polls, following their upset of then-No. 4 UNC on Sunday (Sept 17). In addition, fourth-year right back Biffy Cornelison has been honored by womensfieldhockey.com for her play in Virginia’s two wins last week as she was named to the national honor roll by the website.

Virginia moved up to No. 7 in the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association (NFHCA) poll, sponsored by STX. The Cavaliers, who currently sit at 6-1 (1-0 ACC), also shot up to No. 4 in the womensfieldhockey.com poll. Both are season-highs for the program. The Hoos host William & Mary on Wednesday (Sep 20) before traveling to Boston to take on Boston College and Boston University on Friday and Sunday, respectively. All three teams have been ranked during the season.

A fourth-year, Cornelison scored Virginia’s first goal in the upset of UNC and was a part of the vaunted Virginia defense that held UNC to just one goal and four corners. The Tar Heels had ranked fifth in the nation in scoring offense at 4.00 goals per game, and they ranked eighth in the nation in short corners drawn at 8.17 per game. Against VCU, Cornelison helped the Virginia defense not concede a corner to the Rams, and she assisted on the game-tying goal as the Cavaliers went on to win 3-1. Cornelison, who leads Virginia with four assists, ranks 22nd nationally in assists per game.

In addition, Virginia ranks 15th nationally in scoring average (3.23 gpg), 21st in scoring defense (1.54 gapg), and 16th in scoring margin (plus 1.69). The Cavaliers also rank seventh nationally in win-loss percentage. For the first time, the NCAA is coordinating national field hockey statistics, taking over from the NFHCA that held that responsibility previously.

Game time against the Tribe is 7:00 pm at the University Hall Turf Field.
