Charlottesville, VA – The 15th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team heads to Daytona Beach this week for what it hopes is the first of two trips this season. The Cavaliers will play in the 18-team Fall Preview Sept. 22-24 at the LPGA International’s Legends Course. The course is the site for the 2007 NCAA Championships in May.
The Fall Preview allows the country’s top teams to see the championship venue for the first time, while providing players the opportunity to tee it up on the same course used during LPGA Qualifying School. Daytona Beach is the home of the LPGA Headquarters.
With 15 of the 18 teams in the field ranked in the Golfweek’s preseason top-25 rankings, the Fall Preview is the premier event on the fall collegiate schedule.
Headlining the field is defending NCAA Champion Duke, which won last week’s Mason Rudolph Championship where the Cavaliers placed seventh. Also invited to this year’s Preview are Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, California, Florida Georgia, Oklahoma State, Purdue, Southern California, Tennessee, Texas A&M, UCLA, UNLV, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and host Central Florida. Play begins at 8 a.m. each day.
The Cavaliers’ lineup will include Jennie Arseneault, Leah Wigger, Rachel Smith, Carly Truitt and Lauren Mielbrecht. They are the same five players who competed in the season-opening Mason Rudolph Championship. Arseneault and Wigger tied for 16th at 3-over 219 while Smith was 42nd at 226, Truitt was 50th at 229 and Mielbrecht finished 55th at 230. The Cavaliers completed the tournament with a score of 884, just three shots off the school 54-hole scoring record.
Live scoring from the Fall Preview will be available at Golfstat.com.
