No. 1 Virginia (8-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC) hits the road for only its second road test of the season when the Cavaliers travel to No. 8 North Carolina for an Atlantic Coast Conference match at Fetzer Field. ABOUT THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
Virginia entered the week No. 1 for the first time since the 2002 season. The Cavaliers remained undefeated with a 2-1 overtime win over No. 12 West Virginia at home Tuesday night. Junior midfielder Nico Colaluca scored both goals for the Cavaliers including the game-winning at the 92:38 mark of overtime. It was Virginia’s third straight overtime win as the Cavaliers continue the best start since the 1993 season. Virginia is led by sophomore forward Yannick Reyering who has 13 points which includes five goals and three assists. Colaluca now ranks second on the team with nine points including a season-high four goals. He also has an assist. Jeremy Barlow has six points (two goals, two assists) while senior midfielder Ian Holder has scored two goals for Virginia. UVa has outscored opponents, 14-5, and out-shot them, 125-75. The Cavs are averaging 15.6 shots per game.

ABOUT THE NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
The Tar Heels are looking for their first ACC win after starting conference play with a 3-1 loss to NC State and a 1-0 loss at Clemson. UNC is coming off a 3-1 win at home against VCU. Midfielders Michael Callahan, Stephen Bickford and Scott Campbell each scored a goal in the win. Callahan has a team-high three goals. He’s tied with Campbell with a team-high seven points. UNC is averaging 1.56 goals per game. Goalkeeper Justin Hughes is 5-2-0 on the season and has a 0.71 goals against average. He’s allowed only five goals this season and tallied 17 saves.

LAST TIME AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA
North Carolina’s Ben Hunter scored two goals in a three-minute span in the second half to lift the No. 4 seeded Tar Heels over No. 13 Virginia, 2-1, at Fetzer Field in NCAA men’s soccer third round action last season. The Cavaliers finished their season 12-5-3 while North Carolina (16-3-3) advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals to take on SMU. The Cavaliers out-shot the Tar Heels, 15-6, and attempted 10 corner kicks in the second half. Yannick Reyering scored his 14th goal of the season at the 88:40 mark pulling UVa within, 2-1. Reyering headed in a ball in traffic in the box. During the regular season, Adam Cristman and Reyering each scored a goal and No. 11 Virginia picked up its seventh shutout of the season as the Cavaliers defeated No. 2 North Carolina, 2-0, in front of 3,104 fans at Klockner Stadium last October. The Cavaliers (7-1-1, 3-0-0 ACC) remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference and gave head coach George Gelnovatch his 150th career win. Virginia out-shot North Carolina, 13-9. North Carolina held the advantage on corner kicks, 8-4.

THE VIRGINIA-UNC SERIES
The all-time series is tied 32-32-7. UNC and UVa have split their last eight meetings since 2000. Both teams won once last season on their home turf.

CAVALIERS IN THE POLLS
Virginia is No. 1 in Soccer America, College Soccer News and Soccer Times polls. The Cavaliers are No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCAA) poll. UVa earned the top spot in any poll for the first time since the 2002 season. North Carolina is No. 8 in Soccer America and No. 18 NSCAA poll.

DEFENSE KEY IN CAVS’ UNDEFEATED START
The addition of red-shirt freshman Bakary Soumare and junior Matt Williams has made an immediate impact for the Cavaliers to go along with returning starters Matt Poole, Zola Short and Ryan Burke. Virginia has four shutouts in its first eight games. The Cavaliers have only allowed five goals this season. Burke has played 548 minutes in goal and tallied 17 saves while sporting a 0.66 goals allowed average. Michael Giallombardo has played 182 minutes in goal and registered two wins for the Cavaliers.

COLALUCA’S OFFENSIVE IN 2006
Junior midfielder Nico Colaluca is the second leading scorer for the Cavaliers already in 2006. Colaluca already has matched his career total in goals. He had four career goals and six career assists for 14 career points heading into this season. He already has four goals and an assist for nine points through eight games this season.

BURKE CHASING RECORDS
Senior goalkeeper Ryan Burke continues to move up the all-time career charts. Burke is second all-time in career shutouts (23), games played (66) and minutes played in goal (6,066). He ranks third in saves (200), eighth in GAA (1.05) and ninth in saves percentage (.731).

DEFENSE KEY IN CAVS’ UNDEFEATED START

Virginia’s regular season finale at home against Wake Forest on Oct. 27 will be broadcast nationally by Fox Soccer Channel. Game time has been moved to 8 p.m. to accomodate televion. The Cavaliers and Demon Deacons wrap up the 2005 regular season on the Fox Soccer Channel. Virginia edge Wake Forest in overtime, 2-1.
