Chicago, Ill. – The Chicago Machine of Major League Lacrosse has announced the hiring of former UVa standout Michael Culver as the team’s assistant general manager. Culver was a rookie defenseman for the first-year franchise this summer after helping guide the Cavaliers to an undefeated national championship during the spring.

In his new position, Culver will assist general manager John Meister with sponsorships, ticket sales, game presentation and facility management, along with other responsibilities.

“I’m pleased to have Michael join us in the Machine organization,” said Meister. “He has proven to be a great player on the field and I’m sure that his energy will be a tremendous asset in helping spread lacrosse in Chicago. A player/assistant GM is certainly a unique position within professional sports, but I think his new role with the Machine will give our organization a very positive boost.”

Culver played in 10 games for the Machine this season and snared 27 ground balls, second among the team’s defensemen. He was named the MLL’s New Balance Sportsman of the Year after donating half his season’s salary to the Children’s Heart Foundation.

“Over the years, the sport of lacrosse has provided me with tremendous opportunities and I feel the assistant general manager position with the Machine will allow me to give back to the community,” said Culver. “Right now Chicago is a great sports city and in time I hope to make it a great lacrosse city.”

A key member of two national championship squads at Virginia (2003, ’06), Culver received his degree in English in May. He also received the William C. Schmeisser Award as the nation’s outstanding defenseman and was a first-team All-American this past season.
