No. 3 Men's Soccer Falls in Penalty Kicks, 4-3

GERMANTOWN, Md. – – No. 2 seed Wake Forest advanced 4-3 in the penalty kick shootout to eliminate No. 3 seed Virginia Friday night in the Atlantic Coast Conference Semifinals at the Maryland SoccerPlex. The Cavaliers (14-3-1) and Demon Deacons (15-2-3) played to a 1-1 tie after two overtimes.
Zack Schilawski put away the Demon Deacons’ fifth penalty kick after Wake goalkeeper Brian Edwards made a save on Jeremy Barlow’s attempt. Yannick Reyering made the Cavaliers first attempt before Edwards made his first save on Zola Short’s attempt. Wake’s Lyle Adams missed high on his penalty kick which allowed UVa to even the shootout on Matt Ayotte’s kick.
Each team had opportunities in overtime. Barlow had a shot saved as Edwards tipped his shot that bounced off the crossbar out of bounds in the 103rd minute. Wells Thompson had a 1-on-1 opportunity in the 94th minute. He missed wide left keeping the game knotted, 1-1.
Virginia played a man down the last 10 minutes. The Demon Deacons avoided elimination when Sam Cronin scored with 36 seconds left in regulation tying the game, 1-1. Cronin found the left corner of the goal off a double pass from Schilawski and Marcus Tracy.
The Cavaliers had a chance to extend their lead in the 79th minute, but Barlow just missed wide on shot from the left side.
Virginia took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Yannick Reyering slipped a pass to Jonathan Villanueva on the right side. Villanueva sent a cross into the box that deflected off Wake Forest’s Pat Phelan as he tried to clear it. Phelan’s attempt hit the back of the net for an own goal giving the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.
Wake Forest outshot Virginia, 23-9. Both teams took three corner kicks. Ryan Burke played all 110 minutes in goal and tallied six saves. Edwards paced Wake Forest with four saves.
Virginia will now await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament Field on Monday.
