Greensboro, N.C. – Redshirt freshman quarterback Jameel Sewell has been selected the ACC Rookie of the Week for his play in guiding the Cavaliers to a 17-7 win over Miami last Saturday.
The Richmond, Va., native was masterful in directing the Cavaliers to their first-ever win over the Hurricanes. He completed 23 of 33 pass attempts for 217 yards and did not throw an interception for the fifth time in eight starts. His 23 completions is the most ever by a Cavalier rookie.
He was also the team’s second-leading rusher with 41 yards on 10 carries and scored both Cavalier touchdowns on runs of 12 and two yards in the first half as UVa built a 14-0 halftime lead.
On Virginia’s opening possession, he accounted for 90 of the team’s 92 yards and capped the drive with a 12-yard run for the game’s first touchdown. In the second quarter he extended UVa’s lead to 14-0 with a two-yard touchdown run on third down. His running prowess and passing efficiency helped UVa have a seven-minute time of possession advantage for the game.
Sewell holds virtually every freshman passing record at UVa and is currently ninth in the ACC in passing efficiency and 10th in total offense.
The Cavaliers end the regular season this Saturday against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The game is scheduled to start at noon and will be televised on the Raycom/Lincoln Financial Sports ACC network.
