The Game
Virginia enters today’s game against Maryland Eastern Shore with a 3-0 record. The Cavaliers are coming off an 81-64 win over UNC Asheville (Nov. 22) at the John Paul Jones Arena. UVa finished the 2005-06 season with a 15-15 record and tied for seventh in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 7-9 mark.

Maryland Eastern Shore is 0-2 on the season. The Hawks are coming off an 82-59 loss at Navy (Nov. 21). UMES was 7-22 overall and finished MEAC play with a 4-14 mark last season.

The Series vs. Maryland Eastern Shore
Today’s game is the first meeting between Virginia and UMES in men’s basketball. The Hawks are the third of three opponents UVa will play for the first time this season. The Cavaliers defeated Morgan State 85-66 (Nov. 19) and UNC Asheville 81-64 (Nov. 22) in first time match-ups this season. UVa could also meet the University of Central Florida, Tennessee Tech, or Puerto Rico-Mayaquez for the first time in the San Juan Shootout Dec. 19-21 in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

Virginia vs. The MEAC
Maryland Eastern Shore is the second of three MEAC opponents Virginia will face this season. UVa defeated the MEAC’s Morgan State 85-66 (Nov. 19) and also plays Hampton on Dec. 16.

The Cavaliers are a perfect 8-0 all-time against teams from the MEAC, including the win over Morgan State. Seven of the previous eight games against MEAC schools were played on Virginia’s home floors (six at University Hall and one at John Paul Jones Arena). UVa’s 102-56 win against Hampton on Dec. 10, 1999 at the Hampton Convocation Center is the Cavaliers’ only away game against a MEAC opponent. Prior to the victory over Morgan State (Nov. 19), Virginia’s 115-66 win over Howard on Nov. 21, 2001 was its most recent game against an opponent from the MEAC.

UVa also defeated Hampton 116-66 in the 1998-99 season. Virginia’s other victories over MEAC schools came against North Carolina A&T (94-50) and Bethune-Cookman (109-49) during the 1994-95 season, Coppin State (63-61) in 1993-94, and Howard (100-64) in 1992-93.

Virginia’s average margin of victory over MEAC teams is 38.3 points per game, which includes a two-point win over Coppin State in December of 1993. The Cavaliers are averaging 98.0 points per game while holding their MEAC opponents to 59.8 points per game.

Double-digit scoring streak
J.R. Reynolds has scored in double figures in his last 27 games, which is the longest streak among ACC players. Reynolds’ streak started with a 10-point performance against Gonzaga on Dec. 17, 2005.

Three-point field goals
J.R. Reynolds has made 163 three-point field goals in his career and is in fourth place on UVa’s all-time three-point field goals list. John Crotty (1988-91) is third with 179 three-pointers.

Singletary from The Line
Sean Singletary is off to a great start from the free throw line. He is 27-28 from the line for 96.4 percent accuracy after making all 12 attempts from the charity stripe against UNC Asheville (Nov. 22). He began the season by connecting on 13-14 attempts from the line against Arizona (Nov. 12). Singletary was 2-2 from the line against Morgan State (Nov. 19).

Singletary has made his last 15 free throw attempts dating back to his final attempt against Arizona.

More Free Throws
UVa has made two more free throws (68) in the first three games than its three opponents (Arizona, Morgan State and UNC Asheville) have combined to take (66) in those three games. Virginia is 68-95 (71.6 percent) from the free throw line, while its three opponents are a combined 48-66 (72.7 percent).
