The Game
Virginia enters tonight’s non-conference game against Gonzaga with an 8-3 record. UVa is 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Cavaliers are coming off a 91-70 win over American (Dec. 28) at the John Paul Jones Arena.
Gonzaga is 9-5 on the season and is coming off an 82-74 loss to then 24th-ranked Nevada (Dec. 30) in Seattle. The Bulldogs have lost their last three contests, their first three-game losing streak since early in the 2000-01 season.
Television
Tonight’s game will be televised by ESPN2. Bob Wischusen will handle the play-by-play. Jimmy Dykes is the analyst.

The Series vs. Gonzaga
Tonight’s game is just the third meeting between Virginia and Gonzaga in men’s basketball with the Zags winning the first two games. Gonzaga won the initial meeting 86-85 (Mar. 16) in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament at The Pyramid in Memphis, Tenn. The Bulldogs registered an 80-69 win (Dec. 17) last season in Spokane, Wash.Virginia vs. The West Coast Conference
Against the current West Coast Conference membership, UVa is 2-2 all-time. UVa has a pair of wins over Loyola Marymount – a 79-77 overtime win on Dec. 23, 2004 and a 76-68 win on Dec. 19, 2003. The two losses have come at the hands of tonight’s opponent, Gonzaga. UVa lost to the Bulldogs 86-85 on Mar. 16, 2001 in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament in Memphis, Tenn., and last season 80-69 (Dec. 17) in Spokane, Wash.
The Cavaliers have never played current WCC members Pepperdine, Portland, St. Mary’s (Calif.), San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara.
Virginia has played nine games against teams that were one-time members of the WCC, going 5-4 all-time against Loyola Marymount (2-0), UNLV (3-1), San Jose State (0-1) and Gonzaga (0-2).
UVa vs. The Evergreen State
The Cavaliers are 3-2 all-time against teams from Washington. Virginia is 2-0 vs. Washington State, 1-0 vs. Washington, and 0-2 vs. Gonzaga.
Virginia’s last win against a team from Washington was a 62-53 triumph over Washington State on Nov. 22, 1998 in the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Last season’s game at Gonzaga marked just the second time Virginia played in the Evergreen State. UVa’s first appearance in the Evergreen State was in the 1984 Final Four. The Cavaliers lost to then fifth-ranked Houston 49-47 in overtime in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament at the Seattle Kingdome on Mar. 31.
Nearly Perfect
UVa was an impressive 27-28 (96.4 percent) from the free throw line in its 91-70 win over American (Dec. 28). The 27-28 performance is the best “non-perfect” performance from the free throw line in school history. UVa’s previous best “non-perfect” effort was 24-25 (96 percent) vs. Marquette on Nov. 26, 1988.
20 or More Points
Against American (Dec. 28), Sean Singletary (33) and J.R. Reynolds (26) both scored 20 or more points, marking just the third time the duo have both scored 20 or more points in the same game. They did it twice last season – Western Kentucky (Jan. 2) – Reynolds 26, Singletary 20, and North Carolina (Mar. 10) – Reynolds 20, Singletary 29.
1000
Sean Singletary became the 41st Cavalier to reach the 1,000-point milestone in UVa’s 91-70 win over American (Dec. 28). He entered the game needing 24 points to reach the 1,000-point plateau and his 1000th point came on a free throw with 6:11 remaining in the game.
Singletary finished the American game with 33 points and 1,009 in his career.
