Virginia opens the new year at intra-state rival Richmond on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Robins Center.
The Cavaliers then open ACC play at No. 2/2 North Carolina on Monday, Jan. 8. Tip-off at Carmichael Auditorium is set for 7 p.m. The Regional Sports Network (Fox Sports Net South, Comcast Sports Net, SunSports, and New England Sports Network) will televise the game live.
SCOUTING RICHMOND
The Spiders, under the guidance of second-year head coach Michael Shafer, stand 5-9 after a 67-55 win at Wake Forest on Dec. 30. Junior forward Christina Campion paces Richmond with 10.9 ppg. Freshman forward Nikita Thomas grabs a team-best 6.1 rpg.
SERIES VS. SPIDERS
Virginia owns a 10-2 series edge over Richmond since the teams first met in 1980. Last season in Richmond, the Cavaliers picked up a 66-45 win.
LAST OUTING
Virginia captured its 17th Marriott Cavalier Classic championship with an 81-63 win over UAB, coached by former Cavalier Audra Smith, at the John Paul Jones Arena.
Freshman Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) led UVa with 20 points, including shooting 9-of-10 from the line. Sophomore Lyndra Littles (Washington, D.C.) followed with her seventh double-double of the season (12th of her career) with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Sharneé Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) rounded out the double-figure scoring with 15 points and nine assists.
Littles earned All-Tournament Team honors, while Zoll was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded UAB, 48-31. The Cavaliers shot 46 percent (28-61) from the field, while the Blazers shot 35 percent (25-72).
IN THE STATISTICS
After 13 contests, sophomore Lyndra Littles leads the Cavaliers with 16.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Freshman Monica Wright follows with 13.2 ppg, while junior Sharneé Zoll adds 12.1 ppg and 73 assists. UVa out-scores its opponents by +11.1 points and out-rebounds its foes by +4.3 boards.
