CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia head softball coach Karen Johns has announced the signing Alison Pittman (Newburg, Pa./Shippensburg Area) to a national letter of intent with UVa during the early signing period. Pittman, a utility player, will enroll at Virginia for the 2007-08 academic year.
Pittman, 5-8, has been a starter throughout her career at Shippensburg Area High School, the last two as catcher. She was twice named to the Patriot News Big 11 First Team and a Public Opinion First Team All-Star (2005 and 2006) for her exploits in softball. Pittman was also named a first-team Carlisle Sentinel All-Star in 2005 and 2006 and a Mid-Penn First Team All-Star three times (2004 through 2006). She was also named the VFW-MVP in 2006.
In 2005, Pittman helped lead Shippensburg Area to the state championship game. Her team was also the runners-up in PIAA District.
Pittman is also an excellent basketball and field hockey player. She is a four-year starting guard on the basketball team and started at midfield and defensive back for Shippensburg Area’s field hockey team. In both basketball and field hockey, Pittman was named a Mid-Penn First Team All-Star the last three years. Pittman made the Public Opinion First Team All-Stars in field hockey in 2006 and was as second-team selection in 2005. In basketball, she was a Public Opinion and Carlisle Sentinel Second Team All-Star in 2004 and 2005.
Pittman was class president her first three years in high school and is currently serving as the senior class vice president. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council President. Pittman is listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and Athletes.
Pittman played travel softball for the Newtown Rock Gold in 2006.
“Alison is a great athlete who can play almost any position on the field,” said Johns. “She will be a tremendous boost to our offensive line-up.”
Pittman rounds out UVa’ early signings. Johns has already announced the signing of catcher/utility player Jennifer Lapicki (Oldwick, N.J./Immaculata), utility player Lauren McCaskey (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos), outfielder/first baseman Courtney Pettit (Deer Park, Texas/Deer Park), and pitcher/first baseman Allee Rife (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area).
