CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team will play its first games of the 2007 season in the Commonwealth of Virginia on Wednesday (March 21) when it travels to Radford for a doubleheader. The first game of the twinbill, which will be played at Radford’s Dedmon Center Field, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Cavaliers enter the midweek doubleheader with an 8-19 overall record. UVa has lost its last five games, including three Atlantic Coast Conference contests to North Carolina in Chapel Hill on March 17-18.
Radford stands at 21-14 on the season. The Highlanders have won five of their last six games. Radford had its five-game winning streak snapped with a 6-3 loss to Western Carolina (March 18) in the Catamount Classic Championship game in Cullowhee, N.C.
Virginia leads the all-time series against Radford 15-9. The two teams split a pair of meetings last season in Charlottesville on March 29. The Cavaliers won the first game 3-1 and then lost the nightcap 2-1. In the 2005 season, UVa won two of three meetings against Radford.
First-year Kelly Haller (Leesburg, Va.) leads the Cavaliers with an impressive .405 (30-74) batting average. With her six home runs, Haller is second all-time at UVa for home runs by a freshman. Haller also leads UVa in RBI (24), slugging percentage (.730) and doubles (6). Fourth-year Brooke Sorber (Alexandria, Va.) is second on the team in hitting with a .310 batting average (9-29).
