Bowen Sargent is in his third season directing the men’s golf program at Virginia. A former standout at NC State, Sargent was an assistant coach at both Tennessee and Vanderbilt before moving to Charlottesville. Let’s Make the Turn with head coach Bowen Sargent.

Question: What is your favorite overall golf course and why?
Sargent: Pinehurst No. 2, Donald Ross’ best design, requires all the shots, memories of my family visiting each summer as we played the North and South.

Question: What is your favorite single golf hole and why?
Sargent: No. 17 at St. Andrews, Great venue, historic relevance, well designed, and the St. Andrews Hotel.

Question: What is your favorite club in your bag?
Sargent: All 14, like them all.

Question: Who has influenced your golf game the most?
Sargent: My father

Question: What is your earliest memory of playing golf?
Sargent: Playing in my first tournament as a five year old.

Question: If you could play with any professional, who would it be?
Sargent: Deceased: Ben Hogan, Alive: Tiger Woods

Question: What is one golf rule you would like to change?
Sargent: A variety of rules concerning the construction of the golf ball as its recent technological advances have ruined the game.

Question: What is your favorite shot to hit?
Sargent: Soft draw with any club

Sargent: Two grown men having a bare-footed race on a driving range covered in golf balls.

Sargent: Talk Radio

Question: What do you love most about UVa and why?
Sargent: Former President Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. Enjoying Colonial America as I do the history surrounding its founding (Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe) is fascinating.

Sargent: Ice Cream

Sargent: President Bush. To see what it’s like to be the most powerful person in the world.
