CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia guard Sean Singletary has received one of the more unusual honors of the 2006-07 collegiate basketball season. Singletary has been named to CSTV.com’s All-Hoops Odyssey team.
Matt Waxman and Jacob Osterhout, two writers/producers for CSTV.com, have traveled around the country on what they refer to as a “Hoops Odyssey” since Jan. 1. They saw approximately 50 games during the regular season and also covered the Missouri Valley, Mid-Continent, Pac-10, Big West and Big 12 tournaments. Their journey continues through the NCAA men’s and women’s Division I tournaments, and the men’s Division II and III tournaments.
Prior to the start of the NCAA tournaments, Waxman and Osterhout selected their All-Hoops Odyssey team from the regular season. The only criterion for selection to the team was that they had to see the players live in action. They saw more than 80 different teams during the regular season and selected the players who impressed them the most in the games they attended.
Singletary was selected to the All-Hoops Odyssey first-team for his play in the Cavaliers’ 68-66 overtime victory over Duke at the John Paul Jones Arena on Feb. 1. His jumper with 26 seconds remaining in regulation sent the game into overtime and he made another jumper with one second remaining in overtime to provide Virginia with its margin of victory. Singletary finished the game with 17 points and four assists in 43 minutes of action.
Other players named to the All-Hoops Odyssey first-team for their play with Waxman and Osterhout in attendance were guard Nate Funk (Creighton), forward Kevin Durant (Texas), forward Al Thornton (Florida State) and center Greg Oden (Ohio State).
Named to the All-Hoops Odyssey second team were guard Mike Conley (Ohio State), guard Dionte Christmas (Temple), forward Julian Wright (Kansas), forward Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina) and center Kyle Visser (Wake Forest).
