CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia head volleyball coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton has announced the signing of Sydney Hill (Kalamazoo Mich./Portage Northern) to a national letter of intent with UVa. Hill will enroll at Virginia for the 2007-08 academic year and play middle for the Cavaliers beginning in the fall of 2007.

“When I met Syd I just knew she was someone we needed on our team,” said Shelton. “Her leadership dynamic is amazing; she is a positive leader who enjoys the process just as much as the result. As a volleyball player she is just as strong. She is a fast middle who is a natural at hitting slides and blocking. Syd is a very welcome addition to our strong returning corps of middles.”

Hill, 6-0, has been an excellent middle hitter throughout her four years at Portage Northern High School, one of the top volleyball programs in Michigan. As a four-year varsity starter, she was named Portage Northern’s Most Valuable Player in 2005. Hill was named to the Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference Central Division First Team in 2007. In 2006 she was recognized with all-state second-team honors (all-state awards for the 2007 season have not yet been announced). She was an all-conference selection in 2004, 2005 and 2006 as well as an all-region performer in 2005 and 2006. Hill is 83rd on PrepVolleyball.com’s Top 100 Senior Aces list.

She further excelled as a middle hitter during her four years of club volleyball. Hill currently plays for Dunes Volleyball Club based in Michigan City, Indiana.

Hill has achieved in the classroom as well. She is a two-year member of the National Honor Society and is serving as an officer as a senior. Hill has been a class officer throughout high school and was class president as a sophomore. She was a Student Senator from 2004-2006 and is the Student Senate Secretary in 2006-07.
