CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia baseball team hits the road this weekend, visiting Virginia Tech for a three-game series as part of The Commonwealth Challenge at English Field in Blacksburg, Va. Game one begins at 3 p.m. Friday, while the Saturday and Sunday games each begin at 1 p.m. WVAX Radio will carry games one and two, while WINA Radio will broadcast the Sunday finale. RSN also will televise the Saturday game to its regional audience.

Virginia (24-5, 5-4 ACC) won two games this week at Davenport Field, downing George Mason, 17-6, Tuesday before rallying to top Longwood, 4-3, Wednesday. The Cavaliers scored eight runs in the first inning Tuesday and coasted to the big win, but then had to rally from an early 3-0 deficit Wednesday to catch Longwood. After Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the ninth, Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) came through in the bottom of the ninth with a single to score Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) and push the Cavaliers to the 4-3 win.

The Hokies are 15-11 overall and 4-5 in the ACC after dropping two of three last weekend at home to North Carolina. Nate Parks tops the Hokies in hitting with a .336 batting average, while Sean O’Brien is right behind at .323. The Hokies are coached by Pete Hughes, who is in his first year as head coach at Virginia Tech. He spent the last 12 years at Boston College, where he posted a 250-181-2 mark.

Virginia leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech, 76-72, and has won six straight dating back to 2003. The `Hoos also will be looking to add to Virginia’s advantage this season in The Commonwealth Challenge. After the UVa men’s tennis team’s win over Virginia Tech Wednesday, Virginia leads the challenge 12.5-5.5. The winner of the baseball series earns one point toward the challenge.

Virginia travels to VMI Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
