CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Devvarman went 3-0 in both doubles and singles in Virginia’s wins over No. 39 Virginia Tech, No. 26 Clemson, and No. 46 Georgia Tech last week.
In the 6-1 victory over the Hokies on Wednesday, Devvarman, the nation’s No. 2 ranked player, topped No. 49 Arvid Puranen 6-4, 6-4. Against Clemson, Devvarman scored a 6-3, 6-1 win over No. 124 Clement Reix. He closed out the week with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jose Muguruza of Georgia Tech. Devvarman also teamed with Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) for three wins at No. 1 doubles last week.
The honor was the third of the season for Devvarman and the fifth of the year for a Cavalier. Huey has been recognized twice this season. Virginia players have won the award in five of the 11 weeks of the season thus far.
The second-ranked Cavaliers play their final two ACC road matches of the season this weekend. Virginia visits No. 35 Miami on Friday and No. 27 Florida State on Sunday.
