GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia first-year first baseman/designated player Kelly Haller (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player of the Week as announced on Monday (April 2). Haller, who earns the honor for the first time, hit .583 (7-12) with eight RBI, two home runs and a 1.083 slugging percentage in four contests last week.
Haller began the week with a 2-3 performance in UVa’s 6-5 win over James Madison on March 31. In UVa’s three-game series against Boston College over the weekend, Haller went 5-9 (.556 batting average) with eight RBI. In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday (March 31), she was 1-2 with a home run, a sacrifice fly, a walk and three RBI. In the nightcap, Haller drove in three more runs with a pair of hits in three at-bats. She also drew a walk. Haller wrapped up the week with a 2-4, two-RBI performance on Sunday (April 1).
On the season, Haller is hitting an impressive .439 (43-98) with 10 home runs and 38 RBI, all of which lead the team. She also boasts team-highs in slugging percentage (.806), on-base percentage (.533), total bases (79) and walks (20).
Virginia, fresh off the ACC victory over Boston College Sunday (April 1), returns to action on Tuesday (April 3) when it hosts Towson University in a doubleheader at The Park. The first game of the twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday’s doubleheader against Towson continues UVa’s 10-game homestand. The Cavaliers enter the doubleheader with a 12-24 overall record and a 1-8 mark in ACC play.
Towson stands at 15-15 overall and 2-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Tigers had their for game winning streak snapped with a 6-0 loss to Delaware on Sunday (April 1). Towson swept a doubleheader from the Blue Hens on Saturday (March 31) by scores of 1-0 and 6-0.
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series against Towson 9-4. The two teams split a doubleheader at Towson last season on May 2. The Tigers won the first game 1-0 and UVa earned a split with a 4-2 victory in the second game. Towson took both ends of doubleheader from the Cavaliers in the 2005 season.
