CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s basketball team is ranked 24th in the final USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll of the 2006-07 season. It’s the first time the Cavaliers have been ranked in the final coaches’ poll since the 2000-01 season.
Virginia finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 21-11, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and tied for the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship with a conference record of 11-5. UVa defeated Albany 84-57 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Tennessee 77-74 in the second round.
It’s the first 20-win season for the Cavaliers since 2000-01 and the most conference wins in a season for the program since 1994-95 when Virginia finished 12-4. UVa was picked to finish eighth in the conference in the preseason.
Virginia defeated four teams ranked in The Associated Press Top-25 at the time of the game during the 2006-07 regular season. The Cavaliers were 16-1 at home, the most home victories in a season in the history of the UVa men’s basketball program.
