Cavalier Women's Tennis Defeats Maryland 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 49 Virginia women’s tennis team opened its season ending four-match homestand with a 6-1 victory over Maryland Saturday afternoon at the Boyd Tinsley Courts. The win improves the Cavaliers’ record to 9-8 on the season, 3-5 in the ACC, while the Terrapins fall to 8-11, 1-7 ACC.
Virginia took the 1-0 lead in the match by winning two of the three doubles contests. First-years Brintney Larson (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) cruised to an 8-0 win over Brooke Rogers and Maggie MacKeever at No. 2 doubles. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) clinched the opening point for Virginia with their 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Elyse Steiner and Lisa Miller.
The lead became 2-0 in favor of Virginia as Maryland’s Eleanor Peters retired in her match against Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) at No. 2 singles after Yahner won the first set 7-5. Rales’ 6-1, 6-1 victory over MacKeever at No. 5 singles made the score 3-0 and Pereira’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Rogers at the No. 4 position clinched the dual match. Stevens defeated No. 92 Marianne Baker in three sets at No. 1 singles and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) downed Miller at No. 6 singles for the final two Cavalier points of the afternoon.
Virginia will host Boston College at noon on Sunday. That match has been moved indoors and will be played at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
