CHARLOTTESVILLEJacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) has been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the first career league pitcher of the week honor for Thompson.

Thompson was dazzling in his Friday night performance against Duke, throwing his second career complete-game shutout. He did not walk a batter and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts while needing just 104 pitches to finish matters. He faced just three batters over the minimum and did not allow a runner past second base.

Thompson improved to 8-0 on the year with a league-low 1.49 ERA after the Duke game. It was his first shutout and complete game of 2007. Thompson is now 4-0 in ACC starts this year, including Friday wins in his last three outings.

It is Virginia’s second league honor of the season, as Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) earned player of the week laurels Feb. 19. The award marks Virginia’s first ACC Pitcher of the Week honoree since May 1, 2006, when Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) earned the distinction.

Virginia travels to VCU Tuesday for a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
