CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced Monday. Huey went 2-0 in both singles and doubles on the week as the Cavaliers topped Miami and Florida State on the road to improve to 9-0 on the year in the ACC.
In the 5-2 victory over the No. 37 Hurricanes on Friday, Huey teamed with Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) for an 8-5 victory over No. 8 Josh Cohen and Luigi D’Agord, handing the Miami duo their first loss in ACC play. In singles, Huey notched a victory over No. 55 Daniel Vallverdu at No. 2 singles.
On Sunday, Huey was part of the Cavalier comeback from 3-0 down to defeat No. 25 Florida State 4-3. In his match against No. 92 Jean-Yves Aubone at No. 2 singles, Huey rallied from down a break in the third set for a 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win. That win drew the Cavalier even in the match at 3-3 before Marko Miklo (Bratislava, Slovakia) clinched the victory.
The honor was the third of the season for Huey and the sixth of the year for a Cavalier. The only other player in the ACC to be recognized three times this season has been Huey’s teammate and doubles partner Devvarman. Virginia players have won the award in six of the 12 weeks of the season thus far.
Huey, ranked No. 22 nationally in singles, has 28-6 overall record this season and a 21-3 record in dual matches. He has posted an 8-1 record in the ACC at No. 2 singles this season. Huey and Devvarman are ranked No. 2 nationally in doubles, with a 25-6 overall record. The duo is 19-5 at No. 1 doubles, including an 8-1 mark in the ACC.
The No. 3 Cavaliers conclude the regular season with a pair of matches at home this weekend at the Snyder Tennis Center. Virginia will host No. 16 Duke at 3 p.m. on Friday and No. 5 North Carolina, the only other undefeated team in ACC play, on Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission to both matches is free.
