CHARLOTTESVILLE – The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team returns to Davenport Field this weekend, playing host to Georgia Tech in a three-game series. The teams will play at 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday, and all three contests will be webcast on ACC Select.
Virginia (30-7, 10-5 ACC) holds a one-game edge over Georgia Tech (21-13, 9-6) for second place in the ACC Coastal division standings entering the weekend. The Cavaliers won two of three from Duke last weekend while the Yellow Jackets dropped two of three at Miami last week.
Virginia is coming off an 8-1 win Tuesday at VCU. David Adams (Margate, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored for Virginia (30-6), while Brandon Marsh (Alpharetta, Ga.) had two hits and Tyler Cannon (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.) drove in three runs.
Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) extended his career-best hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the eighth inning. His streak is the second-longest current streak in the ACC behind the 27-game streak held by North Carolina’s Dustin Ackley.
The Cavalier pitching was solid at VCU, allowing just five hits. Michael Schwimer (Alexandria, Va.) earned the win to improve to 2-0 after tossing 2 1/3 innings of perfect baseball. Starter Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.) survived a shaky first inning before settling down and going 4 1/3 innings, allowing one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out five. Casey Lambert (Harrisonburg, Va.) pitched the ninth inning, marking his 100th career appearance at Virginia.
Georgia Tech is 21-13 overall and 9-5 in the ACC after dropping two of three at Miami last weekend. Danny Payne leads the Yellow Jackets with a .381 batting average, while Michael Fisher boasts a .360 average. Eddie Burns (2.33) has the top ERA for the Jackets, while David Duncan (3.53) and Ryan Turner (3.88) also have been solid starters.
Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall won his 600th career game last Friday at Miami and is 600-261 in 14 years at the school.
Georgia Tech holds a 58-34-1 edge in the all-time series with Virginia. The Yellow Jackets nabbed two of the three games last year against Virginia in Atlanta. Virginia swept Georgia Tech in the Jackets’ last trip to Davenport Field in 2005.
Virginia is scheduled to start reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) Friday night, with Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) and Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) starting Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The Cavaliers are back at home on Tuesday, welcoming Richmond to Davenport Field for a 7 p.m. game.
