CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) was named ACC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week conference officials announced Tuesday. Devvarman went 2-0 in both singles and doubles on the week as the Cavaliers topped Duke and North Carolina to complete an undefeated ACC regular season campaign.

In the 6-1 victory over No. 5 Duke on Friday, Devvarman defeated No. 48 Kiril Dimitrov at No. 1 singles. The win was Devvarman’s 100th career singles win, making him the fourth Cavalier to reach that mark. However, he becomes the first among that group to reach the 100-win plateau during his junior season. In doubles, Devvarman teamed with Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) for a win over fifth ranked Joey Atas and David Goulet.

On Sunday, Devvarman led the Cavaliers to a 6-1 win over No. 5 North Carolina to complete an 11-0 conference season and give Virginia its fourth consecutive ACC regular season title. In singles, Devvarman topped No. 63 Benjamin Carlotti 6-2, 6-1. The team of Devvarman and Huey downed No. 48 Lenny Gullan and David Stone 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

The honor was the fourth of the season for Devvarman, giving him the most ACC Player of the Week awards for the year, one more than his teammate Huey. The Cavalier duo won the award seven of the 13 weeks of the season.

Devvarman, ranked No. 2 in the ITA singles rankings, has a 31-5 overall singles record this season. The team of Devvarman and Huey are ranked No. 2 in the ITA doubles rankings, with an overall record of 27-6. Devvarman posted a 10-1 record this season in the ACC in both singles and doubles (with Huey).

The No. 2 Cavaliers are the No. 1 seed for this weekend’s ACC Tournament at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. Virginia will have a first round bye and open play on Friday with a quarterfinal match against either No. 8 seed Miami or No. 9 seed Georgia Tech. Match time is 9 a.m. and the tournament will be broadcast online by ACC Select.
