Virginia Golfers Look to Finish on High Note at Cavalier Classic

Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia men’s golf team wraps up the 2007 regular season when it plays host to the 20th annual Cavalier Classic at the par-72, 7,000-yard Birdwood Golf Course April 28 and 29. The 54-hole tournament will feature 36 holes of competition on Saturday and a single round on Sunday. Both rounds will begin at 8:30 a.m. from the first and 10th tees.

The field for this year’s tournament includes Belmont, Boston College, Central Arkansas, James Madison, Maryland, UNC Greensboro, Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth and William & Mary.

Maryland won the tournament last year with a score of 7-over 871. Virginia’s Orange Team was second at 879, James Madison was third at 894, VCU placed fourth at 891 and the Virginia Blue Team was fifth at 901.

The last time the Cavaliers took top honors was in 1997. Virginia has also won the event in 1995, 1990 and 1988.

Virginia senior Brad Tilley defeated Maryland’s Blaine Beffley in a marathon seven-hole playoff for medalist honors after they finished regulation tied at 216. Tilley became the first UVa golfer to capture top honors at the Cavalier Classic since Simon Cooke did it in 1994 by shooting 8-under 208.
