Greensboro, NC – The University of Virginia placed four players on the 11-man All-Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse squad announced by the conference office. The All-ACC team is determined by a vote of the league’s four head coaches.
Leading the way for the Cavaliers is attackman Ben Rubeor, one of only three repeat selections from last season. The junior from Towson, Md., currently leads the nation in scoring with an average of 4.46 points per game. He is tied with Duke’s Zack Greer as the league’s goal scoring leader with an average of 3.08 goals per game. He has scored 40 goals this spring, one of only nine players in school history to do so.
Two Cavalier defensive players were chosen for the first time–close defenseman Ricky Smith and goalie Kip Turner.
Smith, a native of Hicksville, N.Y., has been a mainstay on one of the nation’s leading defenses throughout his career. A deft stick handler who draws the opposition’s top attackman, Smith leads the team with 27 caused turnovers and is fourth among league defensemen with 40 ground balls.
Turner has started in goal for the Cavaliers the last three seasons. An Annapolis, Md., native, he leads the conference with a 6.87 goals against average and is second with a .593 save percentage. He has had a save percentage of at least .610 in eight of the last 12 games. He was named ACC Player of the Week after making 14 saves to help lead UVa to a 10-9 overtime win over North Carolina.
Danny Glading, last year’s Freshman of the Year, is the only sophomore on the squad. An attackman from Bethesda, Md., he is currently sixth in the league in scoring with an average of 3.08 points per game. He has been the team’s leading scorer in three of the last four games and ranks fourth in the league in goals, averaging 2.0 per game.
Duke also placed four players on the all-league squad–D Casey Carroll, A Matt Danowski, A Zack Greer, and LSM Nick O’Hara. Maryland defensemen Ray Megill and Steve Whittenberg join Rubeor as the other repeat selections from a year ago. North Carolina defenseman Tim Kaiser rounds out the team.
Danowski was chosen the league Player of the Year for the second time in the last three seasons. His father, John, was named the Coach of the Year after leading Duke to an 11-2 record this season. Maryland goalie Brian Phipps was named the Freshman of the Year.
Virginia faces Maryland in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament Friday night at 6 p.m., with Duke and North Carolina to follow at 8:30 p.m.
The Cavaliers won last season’s tournament with an 11-5 win over Maryland in the championship game.
