CHARLOTTESVILLE – Three Virginia baseball players have been selected to the Dick Howser Trophy watch list, announced Thursday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.), Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) and Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) all are nominees for the award.

Virginia joins Texas as the only schools in nation with three selections to the watch list, which is comprised of 50 candidates.

The Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as one of college baseball’s most prestigious awards. Criteria for consideration for the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage, qualities that were exemplified by Dick Howser’s life.

Doolittle is one of the top two-way threats in the country. On the mound, he is 6-3 with a 2.33 ERA, while he is hitting .290 with five home runs and 37 RBI.

Guyer leads the Cavaliers in hitting with a .404 batting average and has a team-best six home runs, 14 doubles and 40 RBI. He also has stolen 15 bases in 16 tries.

Thompson has been Virginia’s top starting pitcher this year, posting a 9-0 record with a 1.54 ERA. Five of his wins have come in ACC play. He also leads the ACC in innings pitched per game (6.91) and is second in opponent batting average (.195) and wins.

Virginia jumps back into ACC play this weekend, playing host to Maryland in a three-game series. The series kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday.
