CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team concludes its regular season by hosting Georgia Tech in a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series this weekend at The Park. The two teams meet in a doubleheader on Friday (April 27) beginning at 3 p.m. The Cavaliers’ six fourth-years will be honored prior to Saturday’s (April 28) game, which will begin at 1 p.m.

Virginia is 17-34 overall and 1-17 in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season. The Cavaliers snapped a four-game losing streak by sweeping a doubleheader from George Mason Wednesday (April 25) at The Park. UVa took the first game 3-2 on fourth-year second baseman Elea Crockett’s (Tucson, Ariz.) two-out single in the bottom of the seventh and then cruised to a 9-1 five-inning victory in the nightcap.

Georgia Tech stands at 46-13 overall and 11-6 in the ACC. The Yellow Jackets are ranked 20th in this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball Top 25 Poll and 21st in the USAToday/NFCA Top 25 Poll. Georgia Tech has won its last 12 games, including a doubleheader sweep over Georgia State Wednesday (April 25). The Jackets, who have set a new ACC record with 78 home runs this season, posted 6-2 and 4-1 wins over Georgia State.

“Georgia Tech is an offensive machine this year,” said UVa head coach Karen Johns. “We will have to play very good defense to overcome their very powerful offense.”

Virginia leads the all-time series against Georgia Tech 31-18. The two teams met four times during the 2006 season with the Yellow Jackets winning three of those matchups. Georgia Tech took the regular season series by winning two of three games in Atlanta March 25-26, 2006. The Jackets swept a doubleheader on March 25 by scores of 10-2 (five innings) and 7-4. The Cavaliers bounced back to win the series finale the next day 5-4. Georgia Tech ended UVa’s season with an 11-2 (five innings) win in the ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., on May 12.

This weekend’s series is the final competition at home for UVa’s six fourth-years. In addition to Crockett, Virginia will also honor Amy McKean (Kent, Wash.), Meghan O’Leary (Baton Rouge, La.), Michelle Salmiery (San Jose, Calif.), Brooke Sorber (Alexandria, Va.), and Coty Tolar (Marietta, Ga.) before Saturday’s game.
