Jeff Jones Named to NABC 2007 Silver Anniversary All-America Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jeff Jones, a four-year starter at guard for Virginia as a player and the Cavaliers’ head coach for eight years, is one of five individuals named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches 2007 Silver Anniversary All-America Team. Also named to the team are Dan Calandrillo (Seton Hall), Eric “Sleepy” Floyd (Georgetown), Pete Metzelaars (Wabash) and Ricky Pierce (Rice).
Each year the NABC selects former collegiate stars from 25 years before who have gone on to distinguish themselves after their collegiate careers. This year’s recipients are members of the class of 1982.
As a player (1979-82), Jones was known as a leader and prolific passer. Virginia compiled an overall record of 102-28 (.785), competed in two NCAA Tournaments and two National Invitation Tournaments (NIT) during his playing career. The Cavaliers won the 1980 NIT and advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s Final Four in 1981.
Jones is second on Virginia’s career assists list (598) and he is tied for second on the Cavaliers’ career steals list (189). He led UVa in assists each of his four years on the team and led the ACC twice. He was Virginia’s team captain as a senior during the 1981-82 season and played in 129 games during his career.
Jones graduated from Virginia in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He was a member of the Virginia coaching staff for eight years before being named head coach of the Cavaliers in April of 1990. In eight years as head coach, Jones led UVa to an overall record of 146-104. The Cavaliers participated in five NCAA Tournaments under Jones’ direction, reaching the “Elite Eight” of the Midwest Regional in 1995, and won the NIT Championship in 1992.
Jones is currently the head coach at American University.
