CHARLOTTESVILLE – Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) has been honored as the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It marks the second career league pitcher of the week honor for Thompson, who also won the award April 9.
Thompson dominated the series-opening game against Maryland last Friday. He gave up just four base hits and did not allow a runner past first. He also finished strong, retiring 13 of the final 14 batters he faced as UVa blanked the Terrapins, 14-0.
It marked Thompson’s third career shutout and second in the last four games. He has not allowed an earned run at Davenport Field in the last 27 2/3 innings, dating back to March 23. Thompson improved to 10-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.38. He is one win shy of the Virginia career record, which teammate Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) tied on Sunday.
It is Virginia’s third league honor of the season, as Greg Miclat (Concord, N.C.) earned player of the week laurels Feb. 19.
Clemson catcher Doug Hogan took ACC Player of the Week honors.
Virginia plays host to VCU at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
