CHARLOTTESVILLE – J.R. Reynolds (Roanoke, Va./Oak Hill Academy) and Sean Singletary (Philadelphia, Pa./The William Penn Charter School) were named co-recipients of the Virginia men’s basketball team’s Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award for the 2006-07 season on Monday (April 30). Reynolds and Singletary were recognized at the team’s awards dinner.
Reynolds, a senior guard, also received the Michael McCann Leadership Award and the award as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. He averaged 18.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 32.2 minutes played a game for the 2006-07 season. He ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in free throw percentage (.832, 164-197), fifth in scoring and ninth in three-point field goals made (62, 1.94 a game).
A team co-captain for the second consecutive season, Reynolds earned second-team All-ACC honors and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award second-team All-Senior All-America honors in 2007. He scored in double figures in each of the last 22 games of the season and scored a career-high 40 points in a victory over Wake Forest on Jan. 21. Reynolds finished his career ranked third on the school’s all-time three-point field goals made list (221), ninth on the free throws made list (402), 10th on the scoring list (1,683 points) and 10th on the assists list (317).
Singletary, a junior guard, also received the award for the most assists. He finished the 2006-07 season with averages of 19.0 points, 4.7 assists and 4.6 rebounds a game. Singletary led the Cavaliers in points (609), assists (151), three-point field goals made (79, 2.47 a game), free throw percentage (.872, 190-218), steals (38, 1.2 spg.) and minutes played (1,064, 33.2 mpg.). He ranked second in the ACC in three-point field goals made and free throw percentage, third in scoring, fifth in assists and 10th in minutes played.
A team co-captain each of the last two seasons, Singletary earned numerous All-America honors after the 2006-07 season and was a first-team All-ACC selection for the second consecutive year in 2007. He was one of 17 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, one of 22 players on the Wooden Award ballot and a candidate for the Naismith Trophy.
Forward/guard Mamadi Diane (Potomac, Md./DeMatha Catholic High School) received the team’s Most Improved Player Award. Diane averaged 9.6 points and 3.5 rebounds a game as a sophomore during the 2006-07 season. He started every game and scored in double figures 17 times.
Senior forward Jason Cain (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram High School) received the Chairman of the Boards Award as the team’s leading rebounder. Cain averaged 6.8 points and 6.3 rebounds a game during the 2006-07 season. He ranked 13th in the ACC in rebounding and had six double figure rebound games.
Freshman forward/center Jerome Meyinsse (Baton Rouge, La./McKinley High School) earned the team’s Academic Achievement Award. He scored 17 points and had 20 rebounds while playing in 15 games during the 2006-07 season.
Virginia finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 21-11, shared the ACC regular-season championship with North Carolina with an 11-5 conference record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was Virginia’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and 20-win season since 2001.
