CHARLOTTESVILLE – Sean Doolittle (Tabernacle, N.J.) and Jacob Thompson (Danville, Va.) have been named semi-finalists for the 2007 Golden Spikes Award, announced Tuesday by USA Baseball. The award, in its 30th year, is presented annually to the premier amateur baseball player. The winner’s name will be announced on June 29 during the 2007 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Show presented by Major League Baseball.
The names of the 50 semi-finalists will now be forwarded to a voting body of 125 who will select the five finalists and the eventual 2007 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Winner.
Virginia is one of just nine schools with multiple candidates. Vanderbilt has three candidates, while eight others boast two picks. The ACC leads conferences with 10 selections.
Thompson, a right-hander, has been dominating this year, as he owns the top ERA in the ACC at 1.38 while racking up a 10-0 record. He also is the reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week after tossing a four-hit shutout Friday against Maryland.
Doolittle is one of the top two-way threats in the country. On the mound, the southpaw is 7-3 with a 2.11 ERA, while he is batting .295 with five home runs and 40 runs batted in this year. Sunday, he matched the Virginia career wins record of 21 and also went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Virginia plays host to VCU at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
