CHARLOTTESVILLE – Two members of the Virginia men’s tennis team were selected to compete in the NCAA Individual Championships later this month. Juniors Somdev Devvarman (Chennai, India) and Treat Huey (Alexandria, Va.) will compete in both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.

In the 64-player singles field, Devvarman is the No. 2 seed, which ties the school record for the highest seed for a Cavalier in the tournament. Brian Vahaly was the No. 2 seed for the 2000 NCAA Singles Championship. It will be Devvarman’s third appearance in the tournament. Last year, he reached the final, falling to Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA. With the performance, he became the second Cavalier to reach the final, joining Vahaly who did it in 2001. This season, Devvarman has a 34-5 singles record and is currently ranked No. 2 nationally in the ITA rankings.

Huey will make his first appearance in the singles championship this season. Last year he was an alternate, but did not make it into the field of 64. This year he has a 32-6 singles record and is currently ranked No. 25 nationally by the ITA.

Devvarman and Huey are the No. 2 seed for the 32-team NCAA Doubles Championship. It marks the highest seed for a Cavalier doubles team since Vahaly and Huntley Montgomery were the No. 1 seed for the 2001 tournament. This season, Devvarman and Huey are 30-6 in doubles and are currently ranked No. 2 nationally by the ITA.

The NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships will take place at the University of Georgia May 23-28, following the conclusion of the NCAA Team Championship. Virginia is the No. 4 seed for the team tournament and will open play May 11-12 when it hosts the Charlottesville regional. The Cavaliers meet Hampton in a first round match at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 11.
