CHARLOTTESVILLE – For the first time since 1984, Virginia High School League (VHSL) state championship football will be played at the University of Virginia’s Scott Stadium.

On May 2, the VHSL Executive Committee voted unanimously to approve staff recommendations on multiple sites, including Virginia’s bid to host the Division 5 and 6 Group AAA championship football games. The agreement is to play the games at Scott Stadium in 2007, with an option to renew for 2008 and 2009.

“We’re delighted the Virginia High School League has decided to play its Division 5 and 6 Group AAA championship football games at Scott Stadium,” said Virginia Executive Associate Director of Athletics Jon Oliver. “It will be exciting to welcome the players, their families and the fans of all the schools involved to Charlottesville and the Grounds of the University of Virginia. We’re proud of our city, our University and our stadium, and look forward to this opportunity to host these championship games.”

Also approved were City Stadium of Salem’s bid to host the VHSL Division I and 2 Group A football finals for a two-year period in 2007 and 2008. Division 3 and 4 Group AA football championships will remain at Liberty University for 2007.

“The best athletes in the state deserve to play at the best facilities in the state,” said VHSL Executive Director Ken Tilley. “Not only will our student-athletes have an outstanding championship experience at these venues, but the changes will also appeal to fans of high school football.”
