CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team is the eighth seed in the 16th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Championship, which will be held May 10-13 at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Fla. The Cavaliers (17-37, 1-20 ACC) begin play in the eight-team double elimination tournament on Thursday (May 10) at 3 p.m. when they play top-seeded Virginia Tech (44-14, 15-5 ACC) in the third game of the tourney.
In addition to Virginia Tech as the top seed, NC State (41-17, 15-6 ACC) is the second seed. Georgia Tech (50-13, 14-6 ACC) is the third seed and host Florida State (42-21, 13-7 ACC) is seeded fourth. North Carolina (43-17, 11-9 ACC) is the fifth seed, while Maryland (32-24, 8-12 ACC) is the sixth seed. Boston College (14-28, 4-16 ACC) and Virginia round out the field as the seventh and eighth seeds, respectively.
The winner of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game moves on to play the winner of the Florida State-North Carolina matchup at 3 p.m. Friday (May 11). The loser of the UVa-Virginia Tech game will play at 10 a.m. Friday against either Florida State or North Carolina.
The Cavaliers have advanced to the championship game of the ACC Tournament four times in the last nine years (1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003). UVa has played in the championship game of the ACC Tournament seven times in the tourney’s 15-year history. Virginia won the 1994 ACC Tournament by defeating Florida State 3-0 in the title game.
UVa opened the 2006 ACC Tournament against the Hokies and posted a 3-0 upset win. The Cavaliers lost their next two games to North Carolina and Georgia Tech and were eliminated from the tournament.

Viewers can watch the tournament games live and on-demand with an All Event Pass ($9.99 per month) or on a per-event basis ($3.99 per event/game). Sunday’s championship game will be televised by RSN-TV (Fox Sports Net South, NESN, Fox Sports Florida and Comcast SportsNet).
