CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team concluded its spring schedule with five wins in seven games while playing some of the top teams in the region and the nation. The Cavalier roster consisted of the 18 letterwinners from last year’s team that will return next season.

“Overall, I thought this was the best spring season we have had since I have been here,” head coach Steve Swanson said. “I was pleased with the effort from the first practice in January all the way to the end. We had a great schedule against some of the top teams in the area and the nation and the results were, for the most part, positive. It was a good opportunity for us to solidify a lot of things.”

The first game of the spring season came over Spring Break as the team took a trip to Hawaii for a week of training. The trip concluded with a 2-0 win over Hawaii in a match played through the rain. Julia Falk (Clifton, Va.) and Jess Rostedt (Kent, Ohio) picked up the goals for Virginia, while Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) recorded the shutout in net.

The Cavaliers returned home for their next three games, hosting a trio of regional rivals. Virginia used goals from Sarah Senty (Arlington, Va.) and Rostedt to defeat West Virginia 2-1. A week later, the team downed perennial power Penn State 4-1, as Rostedt, Sarah Curtis (Yellow Springs, Ohio), Alli Fries (Dublin, Ohio) and Jen Redmond (Morristown, N.J.) scored for the Cavaliers. Against James Madison, the team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit for a 3-1 win as Shannon Foley (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), Rostedt, and Amanda Stewart (West Chester, Pa.) scored.

Virginia fell to ACC rival North Carolina 2-0 at the Kicks for Breast Cancer Tournament in Germantown, Md. The Cavaliers have annually played in the event each spring, which raises money for cancer research.

In its final home game of the spring, the team defeated South Carolina 3-2. Foley scored twice and Caitlin Miskel (Boca Raton, Fla.) added a goal for the Cavaliers in the win.

Virginia ended the spring by adding an extra game to its schedule. The Cavaliers received a waiver from the NCAA to play an additional spring game at Virginia Tech after the Hokies had one of their spring games cancelled due to the tragedy on their campus.
