Virginia’s Haller Earns Second Team All-ACC Softball Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia first-year first baseman/designated player Kelly Haller (Leesburg, Va.) has been selected to the 11-member All-Atlantic Coast Conference Second Team as voted by the league’s eight head coaches. The All-ACC Awards were announced Wednesday evening (May 9) at the annual pre-ACC Championship banquet in Tallahassee, Fla.

Haller is one of only two freshmen to garner All-ACC honors with her selection to the second-team. Florida State’s Monica Montez, who was named the ACC Freshman of the Year, was the only other first-year player to capture All-Conference honors.

Haller enters the 2007 ACC Championship hitting .417 (60-144), which ranks third among all ACC players. She is also third in the league in on-base percentage (.503), fifth in slugging percentage (.701), sixth in RBI per game (0.88, 46 in 52 games) and eighth in total bases per game (1.94, 101 in 52 games). Haller leads UVa in all the aforementioned categories as well as home runs (11), walks (23), sacrifice flies (2), multiple-hit games (17) and multiple-RBI games (12) while starting 52 contests. She is tied with Brooke Sorber for the teams lead in doubles with eight. In ACC play, Haller hit .393 (22-56), which is fourth among all players.

Haller was the lone UVa player to earn All-ACC honors. Ten players were named to the All-ACC first-team and 11 players earned second-team honors. Florida State led all schools with five players earning All-ACC accolades. Georgia Tech and NC State had four players capture All-ACC honors, while Virginia Tech had three all-league honorees. Boston College is represented on the all-conference teams by a pair of players, while North Carolina and Maryland both had one player earn All-ACC accolades.

NC State’s Abbie Sims was named the ACC Player of the Year, while Virginia Tech’s Angela Tincher was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year. Virginia Tech’s Scot Thomas was tabbed the ACC Coach of the Year.

Virginia (17-37, 1-20 ACC) begins play in the 2007 ACC Championship, which is being held at Florida State’s JoAnne Graf Field, on Thursday, May 10. The eighth-seeded Cavaliers take on top-seeded Virginia Tech (44-14, 15-5) at 3 p.m. in the third game of the eight-team, double elimination tournament.
