CHARLOTTESVILLE – The fifth-ranked Virginia baseball team entertains No. 15 Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Davenport Field in the Cavaliers’ regular-season home finale.
Virginia (39-12, 17-9 ACC) dropped two of three to North Carolina State over the weekend, marking just the Cavaliers’ second series loss in nine league series this season.
The Cavaliers will be facing their third ranked team of the season after going 4-2 against then-No. 1 North Carolina and then-No. 13 Clemson. It also marks the first ranked team to come to Davenport Field this year.
Coastal Carolina and Virginia met in the third game of the season, Feb. 11 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the Chanticleers eking out a 3-2 win. The winning pitcher in that game, David Anderson, is scheduled to start against Virginia’s Jeff Lorick (Duluth, Ga.).
In the previous contest, Brandon Guyer (Herndon, Va.) went 2-for-3 and drove in one of the Cavalier runs. Jeremy Farrell (Westlake, Ohio) also had an RBI for Virginia. Coastal Carolina was led by Chris Raber, who went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs on the afternoon.
Freshman Matt Packer (Germantown, Tenn.) made the start for Virginia, allowing two runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Jake Rule (Waynesboro, Va.) took the loss, giving up a run in 2/3 of an inning. Travis Risser picked up the save for the Chanticleers.
Coastal Carolina (41-10, 15-3 Big South) won two of three at UNC Asheville over the weekend. The Chanticleers are hitting an impressive .325 as a team, led by David Sappelt (.379) and Tommy Baldridge (.376). They also boast a lot of power with 60 home runs, including 16 from Chris Rader and 11 from Baldridge.
On the mound, Coastal Carolina boasts a 3.45 team ERA. Anderson (3-2) owns 10 saves and 3.49 ERA this year. He has made 25 appearances with two starts. Coastal Carolina has a 3-3 record against ranked teams and is 2-5 against ACC teams this year.
This marks just the fourth all-time meeting between the teams, with Coastal Carolina holding a 2-1 series advantage.
Virginia wraps up the regular season at Boston College Thursday through Saturday. It marks the Cavaliers’ first-ever trip to Boston College.
