J.R. Reynolds To Be Honored In Roanoke On May 21

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia basketball standout J.R. Reynolds returns home to Roanoke, Va., on Monday (May 21) for a dinner in his honor and to attend J.R. Reynolds’ Day at Roanoke Catholic School.

Reynolds started in basketball for four seasons at Roanoke Catholic School before transferring to Oak Hill Academy for his senior year. Roanoke Catholic won three state championships during his time on the team and he was named the Most Valuable Player in the Virginia Independent Schools Division II three times. During his career at Roanoke Catholic, he scored 2,237 points, made 217 three-point field goals and had 570 assists.

At Roanoke Catholic on Monday, Reynolds will attend a school assembly where his uniform number 20 will be retired. The dinner in Reynolds’ honor is scheduled for the Salem Civic Center on Monday evening. Roanoke Catholic and the Roanoke Valley Sports Club are sponsoring the dinner.

As a senior guard at Virginia during the 2006-07 season, Reynolds averaged 18.4 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 32.2 minutes played a game. He ranked fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in free throw percentage (.832, 164-197), fifth in scoring and ninth in three-point field goals made (62, 1.94 a game).

A team co-captain for the second consecutive season, Reynolds earned second-team All-ACC honors and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award second-team All-Senior All-America honors in 2007. He scored in double figures in each of the last 22 games of the season and scored a career-high 40 points in a victory over Wake Forest on Jan. 21. Reynolds finished his career ranked third on the school’s all-time three-point field goals made list (221), ninth on the free throws made list (402), 10th on the scoring list (1,683 points) and 10th on the assists list (317).

Reynolds was the co-recipient of the Virginia team’s Bill Gibson Cavalier of the Year Award for the 2006-07 season. He also received the Michael McCann Leadership Award and was recognized as the team’s Defensive Player of the Year.

Virginia finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 21-11, shared the ACC regular-season championship with North Carolina with an 11-5 conference record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was Virginia’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and 20-win season since 2001.
