Charlottesville, Va. – Men’s lacrosse player Ben Rubeor has been named a first-team selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III squad, while swimmer Pat Mellors was named to the second team. The award is voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A junior from Towson, Md., Rubeor was one of the nation’s leading players this season and was instrumental in his team’s 12-4 record. He ranks among the national leaders in scoring with 68 points and goals with 46. His 46 goals rank fourth in school history, while his 68 points are ninth.
He earned All-ACC honors this season for the second year in a row. He is majoring in English and has a 3.58 GPA. As a first-team selection, Rubeor advances to the national ballot.
Mellors, a junior from Pittsburgh, Pa. was chosen the 2007 ACC Swimmer of the Year. He shattered two ACC records–200 I.M., 400 I.M.–at the NCAA Championships in March and earned first-team All-American accolades in each event. At this year’s ACC Championships he won his third consecutive conference title in the 200 I.M and the 400 I.M. and was a member of the Cavaliers’ 800 free relay team that won the conference title, setting a new conference record in the process. In the classroom, he has a 3.47 grade point average in Foreign Affairs.
To be eligible for the Academic All-American award, candidates must have a 3.2 GPA or better and be a significant contributor to their team on the field. Virginia is a part of District III, which encompasses the southern Atlantic states.
